GEOLOGICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY SYSTEM

(GEOBIBS)

What it is:

GEOBIBS or Geological Bibliographic Database System is the first on-line database on Philippine Geological references with GIS interface. In 1997, the Geological Database and Information System Section, Lands Geological Survey Division of MGB conceptualized the visualization of references for planning and decision making.
It is a system designed to create a database of references within the geoscience
communities/libraries and plot it out on a map for geographic visualization.
The database engine can be searched using any words or theme on the references, while the map (GIS) component shows point locations of the references which can be clicked to show details of a particular reference.

What does it do:

The greatest aspect is the capability of GEOBIBS data to be overlaid with other map (thematic) data for GIS analysis. The spatial attributes of geological references make it capable of being plotted on the map. Hence, the references were viewed on the map that sufficiently helps in logistic planning of field geological mapping and investigations. Repetitive studies on some areas will be avoided and
field activity will be well organized to avoid time and financial loss.
GEOBIBS can be a tool for decision-makers with regards to prioritization of work.

Current Status and Future Plans:stem work:

This database is also designed to be compatible with the Southeast Asia Network on Geological Information System (SANGIS) and around 400 references were already uploaded in the SANGIS system. SANGIS is a project of CIFEG supported by UNESCO/Earth Sciences Division and French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and IUGS. CCOP helps in presenting this system to the Southeast Asian member countries in 1999.

The GEOBIBS can be also searched at the SANGIS Website.

GEOBIBS contains more than 3000 records of published and unpublished articles stored in the library of MGB. Continues updating of references are being done within the 13 Regional Offices of MGB which are compiled and managed by the Central Office semi-annually.
