ALEGADO, B. O., 1975, Memorandum report on the geological investigation of nickeliferous laterite deposit in Manicani Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, MGB Internal Report: SA-1512, 4 pp.
Industrial Mineral Deposits;
The mineral property of Palawan Syndicated Ventures, Inc. in Manicani Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar contains nickel-iron mineralization in the lateritic soil mantle. Except along the coastal areas which are underlain by alluvium, the whole island is almost underlain by serpentinized dunite and peridotite. Substantial nickeliferous laterite ores are found on these ultramafic areas.
ALEGADO, B. O., 1978, Geological investigation of ZMCR Parcel No. II and III in Candelaria and Sta. Cruz, Zambales, MGB Internal Report: ZB-1829, 17 pp.
Metallic Mineral Deposits;
Field data indicate that dunite is the most favored host rock for chromite mineralization in the Zambales Mineral Chromite Reservation, parcel II. Dunite is observed to contain chromite disseminations in the NW portion of the reservation. In the SW portion of the reservation, dunite is presumed to be the host rock of chromite mineralization since previous drilling activity was undertaken in the dunite. The overall results of the exploration work undertaken in ZMCR, Parcel III clearly suggest that geochemical surveys have value in delineation of nickeliferous laterite areas with gold potential for nickel mineralization.
ANDRADA, E. T., SOSA, L. A., et al., 1980, Memorandum report on the investigation for mineral occurrences in certain land areas in Carrascal, Cantillan and Madrid, Surigao Del Sur and Claver, Surigao del Norte, MGB Internal Report: SR-1990, 10 pp.
Metallic Mineral Deposits;
Particular areas underlain with limestone, clastic rocks and alluvial deposits and swamps do not contain sufficient nickeliferous deposits. An area of approx. 5,700 has, south and adjacent to the Surigao Iron Reservation contain nickel-iron laterite. Called in this report as the Madrid Nickel - Iron Laterite Deposits, it is believed that it will still extend westward.
ANG, V. C. J., 1985, Geological investigation and geologic reserves evaluation of the magnesite deposits in Barrio Canangcaan, Sogod Southern Leyte, MGB Internal Report: LE-5006, 10 pp.
Industrial Mineral Deposits;
The magnesite is a cryptocrystalline variety, occurring as massive-vein-fault wedge along the contact and within the fractured serpentinite and dunite. The massive vein had been formed from hydrous solution. The hydrothermal solution finding its way along the weakest point thus, generated and dissolve magnesium and dunite, but as the solution ascended to lower temperature and pressure zones magnesia was deposited by differentiation while retaining silica thermochemically.
APOSTOL, A., Jr., 1979, Memorandum report on the geological verification of fifteen mining claims applied for mining lease by the Hinatuan Mining Corporation in Hinatuan Island, Province of Surigao del Norte, MGB Internal Report: SR-1968, 6 pp.
Metallic Mineral Deposits;
Nickel-bearing ferruginous laterite derived from the underlying ultramafic rocks covers close to ninety percent of the island. It is dark reddish-brown in color generally darker in shade in the lower portions. It is quite variable in thickness with some areas having as much as 20 meters mantle though this is relatively rare. Generally however, areas with steep slopes have a thin veneer of laterite whereas those with gentle slope have a thick cover.
ARCO, R. C., 1962, Geologic reconnaissance and mineral resources of Bohol province, Philippines, MGB Internal Report: BO394, 1-68 pp.
Industrial Mineral Deposits;Metallic Mineral Deposits
The area mapped includes the mainland of Bohol and the 61 islands and islets covering about 4,078.37 square kilometers. Several formations believed to be Pre-Tertiary include the Alicia schist, Ubay volcanics, Bactol serpentinite, and Talibon diorite. Tertiary formations are the Wahig limestone, Jagna andesite, Carmen formation, Sierra Bullones Limestone, Kabulao conglomerate, Maribojoc limestone. The ages of the Tertiary dated sedimentary rocks range from 04,5 (Wahig) to g-h (Maribojoc). Recent deposits consist essentially of alluvium. Prominent physiographic units are depicted in the mainland and include : eastern and western mountain ranges, the vast expanse of relatively gently rolling plains in the Carmen area, the beautifully arranged, symmetrically formed "haycock hills" in Carmen-Batuon-Bilar-Borja-Balilihan area, elongated cluster of hills of moderate height in the Ubay-San Pascual area, Anda and Loon elevated Plateaus, Plio-Pleistocene terrace levels etched in Carmen sandstone and shales, and teh "Ilihan plug" at Tubigon. The mainland of Bohol is a broad southward plunging syncline with anticlines on the Sierra Bullones mountain range and Tubigon. Minor synclines are mapped in Buenavista and Colonia-Mahayag areas. During Maribojoc time, the mainland was perhaps tilted a little to the southwest, allowing sea transgression and limestone deposition. Several metallic prospects were observed in the following localities: Bass-Bagacay, Campacot and Balisong in Talibon, Buli and Bonakan in Jetafe, Colonia and Buenavista in Carmen, Guindulman and Anda, Bungwalog, Duaro, Nagasnas, Alicia, Bactol, Jagna, Tambu, Mabini, Tugma, Jetafe, Danao Valley, Talibon and Inabanga. The copper prospects of the province need some more prospecting and geochemical study. The establishment of the Loboc hydroelectric power plant will generate the creation of a series of cottage industries utilizing as raw materials the non-metallic deposits like guano, lime, and clay of the mainland. Although the local clay is of the low rank, ordinary kitchenware for local requirements may be supplied.
ARGAŅO, W. P., 1971, Report on the Geological Investigation for Nickel-Laterite Deposits in Barrios Malinao and Malbug, Gingoog City, MGB Internal Report: MI-1127, 1-8 pp.
Metallic Mineral Deposits;
The claim arae is for the most part underalin by a well-indurated sedimentary rock unit associated with pyroclastics and lava flows. The younger basic volcanic rock just fringes the western side of the claim area. It is probable that this basic volcanic rock is part of the eastern edge of the extensive lava flows predominantly underlying Gingoog City and vicinity. The claim area found underlain by the well-indurated sedimentary rock unit is not mineralized. The lateritic soil is derived from the weathering of basalt and do not contain nickel like those derived from ultramafic rocks. If the laterite have high alumina content and with none or negligible silica, it may be considered as aluminum ore. This could be determined only through chemical analysis.

BAILEY, T. F., 1948, Method of reducing iron ores, MGB Internal Report: PHIL-144, 7 pp.
Geochemistry;
The method of reducing iron ores containing nickel oxide and chromium oxide which consist in subjecting the ores to the action of sufficient reducing agent to reduce all the nickel and only a portion of the iron, but none of the chromium at a temperature sufficient to melt the reduced metal and in the presence of sufficient lime to produce a fluid slag, leaving the remainder of the iron oxide and all the chromium oxide in the slag and then separating the fluid slag from the fluid metal, and finishing the fluid nickel steel to specifications, then subjecting the fluid slag to sufficient reducing agent at a sufficient temperature to reduce the chromium oxides and the remainder of the iron oxides in slag.
BALLESTEROS, B. C., 1976, Verification of chromite and bauxite mineralization of eight lode claims situated in Giporlos, Eastern Samar, MGB Internal Report: SA-1610, 6 pp.
Metallic Mineral Deposits;
The area investigated is not within the proposed bauxite reservation. Although considerable red clay exists adjacent to it, the composition, however, is probably more nickeliferous being the dominant weathering product of ultramafic rocks.
BARNES, S. J., COUTURE, J. F., et al., 1993, Nickel-Copper occurrences in the Belleterre-Angliers belt of the Pontiac subprovince and the use of Cu-Pd ratios in interpreting PGE distributions, Economic Geology, 88, 1402-1418 pp.
Metallic Mineral Deposits;Geochemistry
within the Balleterre-Angliers greenstone belt of the Pontiac subprovince there are a number of Ni-Cu sulfide occurrences associated with synvolcanic gabbros. The stratigraphy and geochemistry of the belt suggest that it is a rifted island arc and that the gabbros containing Ni-Cu sulfides were derived from the mantle plume that rifted the island arc.
BAUTISTA, N., 1970, Mineral verification of one hundred and ten lode claims in Rio Tuba, Bataraza, Palawan applied for lease by the Rio Tuba Nickel Mining Corporation, MGB Internal Report: PW-1033, 5 pp.
Metallic Mineral Deposits;
Chemical analyses from the zone of weathered serpentine and serpentinized ultramafic rocks gave higher nickel values that range from 1.40% to 1.85% nickel. Weighted average for the lateritic soil and the saprolite have been reported to be 1.31% nickel and 37.00% iron.
BAUTISTA, N. B. and APELO, M. R., 1971, Geologic investigation of 54 placer claims in Aborlan, Palawan for Navarro and Cunanan Surveying Co., MGB Internal Report: PW-1129, 7 pp.
Metallic Mineral Deposits;
A paid geologic investigation was done on 54 placer claims in Aborlan, Palawan for Navarro and Cunanan Surveying Co. The northeastern half of the investigated area is underlain by metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The southwestern portion is underlain by ultramafic rocks (serpentinized dunite, peridotite, and pyroxenite) from which, under favorable weathering conditions as in a warm, humid climate in a landscape of low relief under a suitable vegetation cover, residual lateritic soils with enriched concentrations of nickel may result. The lateritic soil from this section of the claim area gave nickel values from 0.70% to 0.84% which are very good indications. Iron ranged from 17.00% to 23.20%. Boulders in the lateritic soil gave 0.84% nickel. The trend of the tenor with depth may be determined by test pit study and sampling. The high relief of the ultramafic terrain and the resulting rather high average slope angles are unfavorable situations which must be carefully considered should a valuation of the area is contemplated.
BROTZEN, O., 1962, Final report on geochemical prospecting in the Philippines, MGB Internal Report: Phil-513, 21 pp.
Exploration Geochemistry;
Most of the present work must be regarded as various orientation studies to as certain the applicability of geochemical prospecting techniques under Philippine conditions. Nevertheless some results of a more directly practical interest have been obtained. Thus, persistent copper content in the sediment of the Asig and King-king river and some others in the Pacific Cordllera of Mindanao and also of the Saltan river in Kalinga, Mountain Province, definitely deserve further attention.
