6 firms vie for Presiential Mineral Industry Environmental Award

(November 10, 2003) - Six (6) companies are vying for this year’s Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award (PMIEA), the highest recognition in environmental management in mining and quarrying in the country.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) announced the six nominees as:

1. Silangan Mindanao Exploration Co. Inc. (Exploration Category)
2. QNI Philippines (Exploration Category)
3. Cagdianao Mining Corp. (Surface Mining Category)
4. Taganito Mining Corp. (Surface Mining Category)
5. Union Cement Corp. – Bulacan Plant (Quarry-Cement Category)
6. Union Cement Corp. – La Union Plant (Quarry-Cement Category)

MGB Director and PMIEA Secretariat Chairman Horacio C. Ramos said PMIEA recognizes outstanding levels of dedication, initiative and innovation in the pursuit of excellence in environmental exploration, mining and other related entities involved in the various aspects of mineral utilization.

“It is meant to be a fitting recognition of the private sector’s initiatives and exemplary achievements in the protection of the environment in the mineral sector,” Ramos said.

Established under Executive Order No. 399 in February 1997, Ramos said the PMIEA is in pursuit of the policy that the exploration and mining operation shall be pro-people and pro-environment in sustaining wealth creation and improved quality of life.

Under PMIEA rules, the scope of environmental management include, among others, programs being implemented for the environmental protection and enhancement of mining areas, development of host and neighboring communities, land use improvement, exploration and mining site rehabilitation and final decommissioning.

An eight (8) member PMIEA Selection Committee, headed this year by DENR Secretary Elisea G. Gozun and Chamber of Mines of the Philippines President, administered the search and selection of the qualified candidates for the award.

Other members of the Selection Committee are: Trade and Industry Secretary Manuel Roxas III; Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit; Science and Technology Secretary Estrella Alabastro; Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association President Ernesto Rodriguez; and Philippine Mineral Exploration Association President Tony Robbins.
