THE REVITALIZATION OF THE MINERALS INDUSTRY PROGRAM

The Philippine government is now pursuing serious efforts to revitalize the minerals industry as part of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s priority economic and social development agenda.
Listed below are the initiatives under the Revitalization program:
The Revitalization of the Philippine Minerals Industry Program - On December 19, 2003, Sec. Elisea G. Gozun presented to the President and the Cabinet the actions/strategies envisioned by DENR-MGB in pursuing the minerals industry's revival. Having gained the approval of the President and the Cabinet, these strategies/actions are now the focus of DENR-MGB's policy and program initiatives.

Mineral Resources Development Projects - The DENR-MGB has identified 24 medium to large-scale mineral resources development projects that are expected to bolster the revitalization program of the government. These projects have the potential to generate at total of US$6.7 in investments and about 200,000 direct and indirect employment over until 2010years. Also expected to come on stream during the period are 16 exploration projects with potential to generate $92.5 million in investments.

Mineral Action Plan for Minerals Development - As mandated under Executive Order No. 270, as amended, an interagency technical working group led by the DENR crafted the MAP for minerals development providing the strategic directions for the exploration, development and utilization of the country’s mineral resources. After a series of consultations and thorough review, the Office of the President issued Memorandum Circular No. 67 on September 13, 2004 directing all agencies of government to operationalize the MAP.
